Here's what your heating technician should check during preventive maintenance, along with a few critical tasks:
- Thermostat: Your technician will check the settings to make sure it communicates accurately with the heating equipment. The technician may calibrate the thermostat if necessary, and if applicable, test and change the batteries.
- Electrical connections: Your technician will check for loose and faulty electrical connections, tightening them up, if needed. Bad electrical connections can be a safety hazard, and lead to excess energy consumption.
- Lubrication: Movable parts within the heating system require lubrication to run properly. Parts lacking lubrication can wear down more quickly than expected, and may use excessive power to perform their functions.
- Cleaning: Your technician will check the components of your heating system for dirt and debris. If unattended, these particles can clog up the system and damage it.
- Fuel connections: Fuel connections will be inspected for leaks and other possible malfunctions, both of which are a fire hazard. Faulty connections could also allow poisonous carbon monoxide gases to enter your home.
- Component inspection: Multiple components will be inspected to ensure proper functioning and to diagnose issues before they become problems. Left unchecked, operating your system with problematic components can cause extensive damage. For example, a cracked heat exchanger is a serious issue which needs attention before you begin using your furnace for the season.
