That used to be the method of sizing an air conditioner (and unfortunately still is by some contractors) but not anymore. There's a scientific method that responsible heating and air technicians now use. And, the calculation even includes adding the body heat of everyone in your household.

In days past, technicians would simply add up your home's square footage to determine the size of your air conditioning. That has created problems for many homeowners. Here's what can happen if an air conditioner is the wrong size.

Too Large -- Oversize air conditioning doesn't run long enough to remove adequate humidity. It can break down earlier than it should and doesn't properly distribute air.
Too Small -- Units too small run too much and waste energy. They can wear out too quickly and have a hard time cooling the home during excessive heat.

A proper air conditioner should be sized based on a number of factors including these:

Appliances in the home that give off heat.
Window sizes and placement.
The home's position relative to the sun.
Insulation amounts.
Ceiling heights and square feet.
Occupants in the home.

They will make sure your air flow rate is sufficient and refrigerant levels are at the amount recommended by the manufacturer.
