Energy costs are rising every year and millions of people are looking for ways to conserve energy and cut costs. One alternative to both of these problems is solar energy. Solar power can be used to provide electricity and hot water for your home, and can position your household for significant, lasting savings.
Advantages of solar power
Installing a solar photovoltaic (PV) system in your home will net you long-term benefits:
- It helps you save -- Solar energy does have up-front costs of purchasing and installing the solar panels, but once that initial investment breaks even, the savings is substantial. If your family uses a lot of electricity on a daily basis, the break-even period can be reached even faster. Further, if your equipment produces more energy than you use each month, your utility company can buy back the surplus energy and issue you a credit.
- It's good for the environment -- Solar power produced by the sun is renewable energy. And there are no harmful gases or pollutants released into the atmosphere when using it. Other forms of fuel used for electricity often release carbon, nitrogen, or sulphur dioxide as well as mercury into the air.
- It requires little maintenance -- Solar PV systems generally do not have mechanical parts that wear out, which means fewer parts are susceptible to breakage. And it's silent -- with no noise pollution.
- It can grow with you -- If your electrical needs change, you can add more panels to your grid system as the need arises.
PV systems do have a few drawbacks, and savvy homeowners should compare the cost-benefits of installing such a system before proceeding. It's particularly useful to evaluate:
- Up-front costs -- The initial investment required to purchase such a system is generally higher than that of a conventional HVAC system.
- Installation space -- You will need a large area in which install the PV panels, either on your home's roof or in another appropriate area, such as on the ground. The panels have to have full exposure to the sun to store enough energy to provide electricity or hot water, so the place where they are installed should not be shaded by trees, roof lines or other obstructions that block the sun.
